Health and Safety Measures During Your Local Move

Health and Safety Measures During Your Local Move

Moving at any time isn’t the easiest task. Maybe you’re downsizing, cleaning things out or moving across town. So when you add a global pandemic on top of that, things can get much more overwhelming.

Unfortunately, despite even the worst events, many people can’t afford to postpone moving. And if you’re one of those people, you’re probably wondering what health and safety measures you can take to ensure the smoothest move possible for you and your family during this pandemic.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Be Straightforward With the Moving Company

When it comes to you and your family’s health, there’s no time to beat around the bush. After first searching for “movers near me” online and making a list of your top choices from the long list of moving companies from Richmond, VA, you can then start calling around. From the start of your conversations with the moving companies, you need to be straightforward in your expectations for them as a moving company and for your future move.

You first should ask if they’ve had any cases of the virus within their company. From there you should ask what kind of actions they’re taking to keep themselves and others safe when they move things.

Ask questions such as if they are doing temperature screenings of their employees. Are they employing social distancing when they move people? Do they wear masks and gloves? Do they have any tips for when you pack up your things for them to move?

There’s no question too small in times like these. After you choose the local movers that best fit your needs and that you feel is going to make the biggest effort to keep everyone safe and healthy, you’re ready to start packing.

2. Boxes and Bins

When it comes to boxing things up, you have some options. One thing you could do would be to load things up in plastic bins. Plastic bins will protect your belongings more while also providing a surface that can be easily wiped down on the outside with disinfectant wipes once the movers are gone.

If you don’t want to go the plastic bin route, you still can box things up in cardboard boxes. However, you’ll want to buy new boxes and then dispose of them as soon as possible. Don’t keep them for the next time you move or for other things because the virus can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours.

When moving your clothes, make sure to put them in some kind of plastic bag or cover that also can be removed. When it comes to furniture, get furniture plastic wrap that can be removed easily.

3. Practice Social Distancing

When the movers do come, discuss how you want to go about moving. Do you and your family want to wait outside while they move things in and out? Does the moving company have a way they’ve been doing things to follow social distancing guidelines

Figure all of that out before the movers get there to make things easier.

4. Wear a Mask

All people involved in the moving process should be wearing masks whether they be professional movers or friends over to help. Although not foolproof, a mask will protect everyone if someone coughs or sneezes who has the virus.

5. Stay Aware

On moving day, just stay aware of what is going on. Try to maintain a six-foot distance from everyone if you can.

Try to provide sanitization items such as paper towels, soap and hand sanitizer around all the areas that you can. If you wear gloves, that’s fine, but remember to think about cross contamination, don’t touch anything but moving boxes and take them off to do anything else.

Also, remember to wipe down everything while unpacking and try to do it as quickly as possible.
